Jean-Claude Carriere: The Controversy of Valladolid: Chapter 7: The theater scene between Las Casas and Sepulveda

After seeing the film film directed by Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe , according to a scenario Jean-Claude Carriere inspired by real events (see The Controversy of Valladolid ). we chose to read an excerpt from the novel: discout about "humanity" of certain people .... men have always been the same ...

Arguing in oral

Objective: Learn to debate taking into account the opinions of others. The hearings shall be prepared: this is a debate inconsistent with the obligation to restate the thesis and arguments of the opponent
.

Jean-Claude Carriere: The Controversy of Valladolid: Chapter 7: The theater scene between Las Casas and Sepulveda

Pope sent one of his cardinals to decide the debate between Las Sepulveda Casas. The Dominican Republic maintains that Indian men are like the Europeans. Sepulveda instead says that Indians are born to be slaves. The study of this passage is relevant in three axes. We will study first the two opposing viewpoints, the Sepulveda initially and then as Las Casas, third party to analyze the role of the Cardinal and the theatricality of the text.

Text: Then he said with equal firmness
- Yes, Your Eminence, the inhabitants of the New World are slaves by nature. In all respects with the description of Aristotle.
- This statement requires proof, the prelate said softly.
Sepulveda does not deny it. Moreover, knowing that inevitable question, he prepared an entire folder. He grasps the first sheet.
- First, he says, the first that were discovered have shown themselves incapable of any initiative of any invention. In contrast, we saw them adept at copying the gestures and attitudes of Spaniards, their superiors. To do something, they only needed to watch another perform it. This tendency to copy, accompanied by a real ingenuity elsewhere in imitation, is the nature of the soul slave. Soul of a craftsman, manual soul so to speak.
- But we sang an old song! exclaims Las Casas. At all times the invaders to justify their hold, said the conquered peoples indolent, lacking, but very able to imitate! Caesar told the same thing that the Gauls enslaved! They showed, he said, an amazing ability to copy the Roman techniques! We can not hold this argument here! Caesar deliberately blind to the true life of the peoples of Gaul, their customs, their languages, beliefs and even their tools! He did not, and therefore could not see everything that life offered original. And we do well: we see only what they imitate us! Otherwise, we should drop or we destroy it forever, to then say it does not exist!
The cardinal, who did not abort the Dominican, seems aware of this new argument, which focuses customs of the peoples. He noted that this is a forum for discussion of the most delicate, where we constantly risk being bewitched by habit, taken from childhood, we have our own uses, which we seem thus far superior to other uses.
- Except when it comes to slave-born, "said the philosopher. Because it is clear that the Indians wanted to buy our weapons almost immediately and our clothes.
Some of them, probably yes, "replied the cardinal. Although it is difficult to distinguish in their grounds, which is a sincere admiration or mere sycophancy. What other brands natural slavery have you identified with them?
Sepulveda took a bundle of leaves and begins reading to voice flat as an accurate record and indisputable:
- They ignore the use of metal, Firearms and wheel. They carry their burdens on their backs, like animals during long journeys. Their food is horrible, similar to that of animals. They paint the body coarsely and worship idols awful. I will not return to human sacrifice, which is the brand most hateful and most offensive to God, their state. Las Casas
not talking yet. It only takes a few notes. All this not surprised.
- I would add that they are described as stupid our children or idiots. They change very frequently women, which is a very real sign of savagery. They obviously lack the nobility and the rise of the beautiful sacrament of marriage. They are timid and cowardly in war. They also ignore the nature of money and have no idea of the relative value of things. For example, they exchanged against gold glass broken barrels.
- Well? exclaims Las Casas. Because they do not worship the gold and silver at the point of sacrificing their body and soul, is this a reason to treat animals? Is not this the opposite?
- You divert my thoughts, "replied the philosopher.
- Why would you their detestable food? Have you tried? Is it not rather say to them what they think good or less good? Because a food is different from ours, should we find it disgusting?
- They eat ant eggs, tripe flies ...
- We eat pork tripe! And snails!
- They jumped on the wine, "said Sepulveda, to the point, in many cases, to leave their little reason.
- And we have done everything to encourage them! But do we did not learn, on the other side, they grow fruit and vegetables that so far we were strangers? And some of their tubers are delicious? You say qu'ijs bear their burdens on the back: Do you not know that nature has given them no animal that could do for them? As to paint roughly the body, what do you know? What does the word "rude"?
- Brother Bartolome said the legate, you will speak again, as long as you want. Nothing will be left in the dark, I assure you. But for now, stay silent.
The Dominican, who seems tired, sits down. The cardinal is for the philosopher:
- In your opinion, possession and use Firearms would be evidence of divine protection?
- Proof very obvious.
- However, the Moors possess firearms and use them very well against us.
- They've copied ours. The legate
seems to doubt this last statement. He tries to remember. Did not he read somewhere that the use of gunpowder came from countries of the East? In
assistance, no one can answer with certainty. We prefer to think, and it is actually more comfortable that the firearm is a Christian invention, like most others.
And if by chance, as suggests Count Pittaluga, divine intervention was not clearly shown in the invention itself (which lasted for centuries, to what they say), it certainly manifested itself by depriving Indians until their conquest of such weapons. Thus the poverty of their military equipment not only shows the backwardness of their technique, but that God deprived them of any real defense.
The legate, putting aside the question back to Sepulveda:
- Another thing you bring blood sacrifices they made to their gods.
- Gods cruel, horrible, a true reflection of the people.
- Yes, yes, it is indeed a demonic horror. We all agree. But if they are not human beings at the same level as ours, they are close to animals, can we blame them for that sacrifice? You know what I mean?

Jean-Claude Carriere: The Controversy of Valladolid: Chapter 11: The intervention of the Indian

In 1550, a convent in Valladolid, the Pope sent Cardinal Roncieres to arbitrate a debate which opposes the Dominican philosopher Sépulvdéa Las Casas, about the nature of American Indians. The question asked by the Cardinal refers the Indian woman who prevented her husband to intervene when a monk knocked on the idol. This is what revived the debate.

Text: - Did you see? He failed to intervene! Many voices
approve: Yes, he has shown his stubborn idolatry. Undoubtedly, as stated a few moments earlier the philosopher, he is abandoned by God, he is subject to all the blind forces, a wandering creature gripped between the legs of the devil.

[...]

Cardinal grants this point, could hardly talk.

Record criticism on the movie "THE NOTEBOOK " Hana Makhmalbaf (2007)

I want you to know the movie "The Notebook". It was directed by Hana Makhmalbaf (from a family of Iranian filmmakers).
The action takes place in Afghanistan is a country at war that was led by the Taliban. However the people trying to survive, why some were hiding in caves with their families ...
"The book tells the story of a small Baktay 6 year old daughter who will struggle to buy a notebook so you can go to Abbas school with his neighbor. However, we realize that the conditions are hard, little girls go to school. Marina
ALVES (2nde2)

The film "The Notebook" was done by the director of Iranian Hana Mahkmalbaf I liked the way through the children played their roles!
Initially, we see a girl who comes to herself as she looks after her little brother while her mother goes to fetch water.
Soon after, she hears a young boy, about his age,
reciting the Arabic alphabet. She also wants to do, but unless she takes the book upside down and pretended to read it because instead of reading the words she looks at the pictures. She asked the young boy who is named Abbas to bring it to school to learn as he did. But he said it must have a notebook and pen. Now she has no money to buy it. Abbas has offered to sell her eggs so she could buy a notebook. Suddenly she sees a mother with her daughter, who bought him a book and other school supplies. I had a feeling of pity for the little girl whom she had many miles to sell their eggs in order to buy a notebook. Nour
BEN MANSOUR (2nd 2)

The story of this film is that of a little girl dreaming of going to school ... As a result, she wants to buy a notebook but it has no money. She goes into town and tries to sell eggs to get the money to buy his book ... Having had his notebook Baktay goes to school. Along the way, she met children who do not let it go .... acting like the Taliban in their games.
This film is interesting and instructive. Indeed it shows the difficulty of life in Afghanistan realistically. A strict, continuous violence, stoning, ... . It also demonstrates the inequalities between men and women in this country. Alexandra
MUNOZ (2nde2)

Unaware particularly Afghanistan, I was able to discover certain aspects and I think this movie was quite realistic and representative of the mentality and life in Afghanistan with strong scenes and shocking as those of little boys playing war and pretending to stone the little Baktay or one or Baktay insists on being taken to school boys when the teacher refuses categorically.
Henrique MORENO (2nd 2)

Through this story, we discover the difficulties meets girl, with his friend Abbas to buy a notebook and can finally go to school. This film makes us reflect on life and the place of women in Afghanistan.
This film introduces us to another culture. It shows us that the children of Afghanistan, especially girls, want to go to school but often have difficulty in accessing them. In France, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend school since our earliest childhood. Watching this film, we can study the contrast between the children of Afghanistan and the children of France. Elodie
DUFRESNE (2nd 2)

This film reveals the educational problem faced by girls in Afghanistan, we are having a little girl named Baktay, who "beat" to go to school. Indeed, in this country was under occupation of the Taliban and is now run by foreign authorities, girls do not always have the right to go to school, much less.
This film allows us to realize how lucky we are to go to school, the possibility of studies that we have offered and that other children do not have this opportunity. This film makes us think the selfishness that reigns in us when we think, that we complain of our courses, we want to stop school, while for others the choice has not even happen.
Sarah Cardoso (2nd 2)

This film deals with the status of women in Afghanistan, including their right to freedom, education. Throughout this film we follow the course of the day Baktay, a young girl who wants to go to school. She has encountered many difficulties such as schools for boys, the wickedness of the children, the acquisition of a notebook. The adults around her are too busy to care for her thirst for education.
The film opens us to another culture, another society or the education of children is not a priority. Children merely reproduce the behavior of adults, particularly when the boys take to the Taliban and want to stone Batkay. These passages are sometimes very hard, very realistic while they are still children.

Movie Tokyo Eyes " Jean Pierre Limousin (1998)

TOKYO EYES
" Tokyo Eyes "is a Franco-Japanese film from 1998, this film was listed in the detective genre and thriller. This film was shot entirely in Japan giving it a look and quite realistic view of Japan. We have a viewpoint that wants to be very close to life in Japan: for example in speaking of otaku (fans are monomaniacs a hobby), video enthusiasts in the film. In short, what show people their true lifestyles and refute stereotypes or ideas dated from Japan as the fact that Japanese are all dressed in kimono or samurai still exist.
The story is about a young man barely twenty years covering a glasses that terrorizes people in Tokyo by shooting at people's point of view of the police and residents did nothing for him or these people have done an injustice. But this person called 'the short-sighted "by the media because of his thick glasses has never killed anyone, he just shoot people and frighten them by firing a pistol doctored. A girl looks at him and chases. Mikaela
CLOTAIRE (2nd 2)

This film, released in 1998 in France and Japan, reflects today's society of Japan. The story is based on a detective story in a parallel love story. The main actors are called Shinji Takeda, Hinano Yoshikawa K and interpreting the role of Hinano.

The film is quite understandable and contains a beautiful story, K being constantly hunted by the police but a love story forms. The "fans" of Japan can especially appreciate and understand the mentality of the Japanese.

I, for one, admired this movie. I think this film is really contemporary Japan. I love manga, and this movie references for me to manga "Death Note" by the dual personality of K prosecuted for several crimes, except that the history of Tokyo Eyes takes place in real life. Lauralee

Film "Dead Man" Jim Jarmusch (1995)

Dead Man is a film with Jim Jarmusch in the leading role Johnny Depp.
In the 1870s, a William Blake from Cleveland to go to machine when he learns that his post was taken. He spends the night with a prostitute who gets killed by her boyfriend and also hurts William Blake. He fled into the forest, pursued by hired because he is suspected of murder, where in it he found no body, an Indian who helps flee and teaches him a lot.
LEROUX Ludovic (2nd2)

"Dead Man" is a film by Jim Jarmusch, an American director. This single film was released in 1995. The cast is pretty prestigious, in fact, Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Iggy Pop and William Hurt are gathered for this western strange and mysterious.
Dead Man is the story of William Blake, not the poet but a man can no longer common. He lost his wife earlier and may decide to leave the city where he was born to live in the west recently available, specifically in the town of Machine. Unfortunately, the job he is expecting more available and William Blake finds himself sleeping in the street for his first night in the Wild West. Still, hopefully just be a gentle balm on this bad day. This gentle balm is a prostitute who was converted in the sale of paper flowers. Unfortunately for our hero, the rest is short, just because he is lying in his arms as the lover of it opens the door. In the rush, the flower girl is killed and her lover, who is none other than the son of the most powerful man in the city. William Blake stands accused of two murders and finds himself on the run. It would be bailed out if he had not been hit by a bullet that remained in him and will surely kill him.
In his flight he meets Nobody, a stateless person who is more Indian than he cultivated the West. Nobody has a habit of illustrating his remarks with phrases from famous authors. But this meeting is in danger because William Nobody is pursued by three bloodthirsty killers (Cole Wilson, Scholfield and Conway Twill). The hunt then engages like a philosophical quest between Nobody and William Blake.

This film has a strange atmosphere. Perhaps this is due to the electric guitar of Neil Young in the background, or when the images in black and white. Or signs that appear throughout the film, such an image of religious icon when William Blake murdered without wince.
But perhaps all the charm of the film, a constant dialogue between William Blake and Nobody who leave and hang out. Nobody could be the conscience of William Blake. Indeed, it is representative of his thoughts, he learns from whence its name, he learns to live, he led an adventurous and dangerous journey to reach the end of the journey to death, but of some way to wholeness. Because when one dies, the other can not survive. But despite all the bad guys not "earn" it. Of the three killers, two are dead killed by the third. The second to be killed was even eaten by his "colleague". But this man can not survive a cannibal. In a duel with Nobody, while the boat, which assists in impotent William away to sea, he kills, but it is also affected by the ball Nobody. The three main characters die at the same time. The film ends with an image of the boat sailing on the sea at sunset. His death seemed to obligatory, since the beginning, the viewer knows that the hero must die, but death occurs in such a way that is nevertheless unexpected.

The boat that departs into the sunset symbolizes being William Blake dies slowly. This is an original film but still nice to see. Margot

MUSICAL "LAUGH IN FUGUE: HENRI SALVADOR Haurogné SINGS" (creation Ivry 2008)

Dear Italian friends I will present a spectacle of a singer called Jacques Haurogné that we went to the theater of Ivry "Antoine Vitez. This show is titled "Laughter on the run." It was a spectacle sang the songs were taken from the repertoire of a French singer, who died recently, universally known by the name of Henry Salvador. Jacques
Haurogné did not sing all the songs but some of them (17 songs selected) as "a sweet song" very little known as the general public. Knowing only a few songs and music by Henry Salvador, I was able to find others. This show was quite alive because Jacques was Haurogné engage its audience. This show was entertaining, especially for small as for large ones. Leila
Touiti (2nd 2)

This is a show that includes several songs by Henri Salvador. A man arrives on stage in a strange garment evoking that of a cosmonaut. He drags behind him a cart containing the necessary elements to illustrate his point: Jacques Haurogné about to go into space. It describes why and how he will make his trip with his mysterious caddy. The show is very interesting and is open to everyone. Those who really love the songs of Henri Salvador as "Zorro has come," "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", I suggest you go see this show you will believe me not regret it.

Cast: Jacques
Haurogné singing
Thierry Garcia: guitar, arrangement
Sharmila MOUGAMMADOU (2nd 2).

The title of the show "Laugh runaway" inspired by the song of Henri Salvador "Fugue in laughter." When discussing the songs of Henri Salvador, Jacques Haurogné evokes the icon of the song he heard laughter and even met by attending one of his shows. "He always wanted to make a trip he has never done" is what keeps Haurogné Jacques Henri Salvador, who gives birth to the show created the theater of Ivry.
The idea for this show is born Leila Kukerman, director of the theater that invites Haurogné Ivry. They are preparing the show for two years and we entrust the selection of songs was difficult. They work with the string Quattuor Medrich, Jacques Haurogné said the most promising of France. Thierry Garcia and Jacques Haurogné care arrangements (musical adaptation of the songs). They rework the music to take ownership. With these amendments, Jacques Haurogné gives his perspective on the universe of Henri Salvador. This show is a delight for both children and adults. Stella
