Baudelaire - The Vampire (The Flowers of Evil)
XXXI - The Vampire
you who like a stab in my heart
plaintive entry;
You who, strong as a herd
Of demons, came, wild and adorned
In my spirit humbled
Make your bed and your domain
- Infamous whom I am bound to convict
As the chain
As the game Player stubborn
As the drunk from the bottle,
Like the maggots carrion
- Cursed, cursed be thou!
I prayed the sword fast
To gain my freedom,
And I said to poison
perfidious aid to my cowardice.
Alas! poison and the sword
took me in disdain and said:
"You do not deserve to be freed A
your slavery cursed
Fool! - his empire
If our efforts deliver you, Your kisses
resuscitate the corpse of your vampire! "
